Why do I eat the way I eat?
There is no right or wrong way to eat. The proof is in the pudding. It’s about how food makes you feel. Generally speaking, food that is not the best for us (refined sugar, alcohol, processed foods etc) tends to not make us feel great. This is something that you may or may not know from experience. The important part of all of this is to really listen to what your body is telling you.
A while ago, I started to listen to my body. I figured out what gives me gas, loose stool and what has contributed to painful periods. A big first step is also realizing that these symptoms are not normal and something we should not experience on a daily basis. This was the way my body was telling me something wasn’t agreeing with me.
I started paying attention to when I felt those symptoms and what I had eaten that day. I would make occasional notes for myself to see if it happened again to help narrow down what specific foods might have caused this.
Common food sensitivities are dairy, gluten, eggs, soy and corn. Also as mentioned before refined sugar, alcohol and processed foods can be culprits of various symptoms as well due to the fact that they increase inflammation in the body. If you are finding that these foods/ingredients cause you to feel less than great - it's worth paying attention to.
I have found that a protein rich, high veg, cow dairy and gluten free eating pattern makes me feel my best. Notice I did not call it a diet and it does not have a label/specific name. But don’t forget - I am one person on my own wellness journey. Everyone is different and only you can truly crack the code on what works best for your body.
Explore what makes you feel good and tune in to what your body is telling you. We are all individuals and everyone’s needs are different. You don’t have to follow a specific “diet” but you can use them as guidelines if that helps you.
Once you have an idea of what food makes you feel your best, you can create an eating pattern without them. Of course if you just want to eat cheese yet you know it makes you gassy - that is okay! At least you know why you might feel a certain way afterwards and you are empowered to make that decision on your own.
